On 14th August 1942, there was an uprising against the British, in which five brave fighters Kashinath Hari Pagdhare, Govind Ganesh Thakur, Ramchandra Mahadev Churi, and Govind Sukur More were martyred in Palghar. Therefore, the main circle of Palghar is known as “Paachbatti” (which means ‘five lights’) in honour of these martyrs.

14th August has been declared as “Martyrs Day” in Palghar and people gather at Paachbatti circle to honour five martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Quit India Movement. The NSS unit of St. John Technical and Educational Campus also joined them at Paachbatti. There were 16 volunteers of our NSS units who had gathered to honour these martyrs by prayers.
