BA Students Visit Kanheri Caves for Experiential Learning

The Department of BA, St. John College of Humanities and Sciences (Autonomous), Palghar, organised an Academic Experiential Learning Field Visit to Kanheri Caves, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali, on 22nd August 2026, from 9:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A total of 29 FYBA and TYBA students participated in the visit.

The field visit was coordinated by Dr. Ravi Mishra and Karan Mokha with the objective of providing students with practical exposure to Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) through the study of ancient art, architecture, engineering, inscriptions and water management systems.

At the Sanjay Gandhi National Park entrance, Activity In-charge Karan Mokha introduced the students to SGNP Certified Tour Guide Mr. Mehul Dedhia, who briefed them on the educational objectives of the visit. Led by Mr. Dedhia, the students explored the Chaityagriha (Cave 3), ancient monastic cells and Viharas, gaining insights into rock-cut architecture, Buddhist art, ancient structural planning and rainwater harvesting systems.

Interactive discussions with Mr. Mehul Dedhia and the faculty helped students connect classroom learning with the historical and cultural significance of the site. Students also recorded field observations, captured photographs and participated in a concluding Q&A session. The visit concluded with a vote of thanks to Mr. Mehul Dedhia at 3:00 p.m.

The field visit enhanced students’ understanding of ancient Indian architectural and engineering practices, strengthened their historical and analytical skills, and encouraged peer learning and interaction between FYBA and TYBA students. The activity also fostered greater appreciation of the preservation and contemporary relevance of India’s indigenous knowledge systems and cultural heritage.
