A Session on Expressions of Society

A Session on Expressions of Society

On 10th August, 2024, a seminar titled “Expressions of Society: Exploring Sociology through the Arts” was organized at St. John Junior College, aimed at enhancing students’ understanding of sociology through the lens of artistic expression. The session was conducted by Ms. Seffi George, a renowned independent illustrator and ethnography mentor.

A total of 90 students, including 41 from the B.A. program and 49 from the Arts stream, attended the seminar. The event provided an interactive platform where students were introduced to creative methods of exploring societal issues, focusing on the intersection between visual arts and sociology.

Ms. George led an engaging session where students were encouraged to think critically about society and the environment through artistic interpretation. She emphasized how art can serve as both a medium for self-expression and a tool for social commentary, reflecting societal issues, cultural identities, and environmental concerns.

The session offered practical insights into the role of illustrations, ethnographic art, and other visual mediums in communicating complex sociological concepts. Through live demonstrations and case studies, Ms. George showed how art can depict social structures, identity, power dynamics, and other significant sociological themes in an engaging manner.
